Caring for acute and chronic wounds imposes a multi-billion dollar burden on Australia’s health system. Chronic wounds affect hundreds of thousands of Australians. These wounds are painful and debilitating and are estimated to affect 433,000 Australians and to cost the health system $2.6B a year. Despite this, the issue of wound care receives little attention. The CRC’s vision is to improve wound healing and quality-of-life for people with wounds, and provide cost-effective wound care that lessens the burden on the health system. The CRC will develop strategies, diagnostics and treatments to accelerate healing, prevent wound infection and reduce scar development in acute wounds. It will improve knowledge of key factors underlying chronic wound development, healing and effective care.
